Phase separation in elastically coupled binary alloys

چکیده

I review some of the theory[1–4] behind microstructure formation in the phase separation of binary alloys, in particular how compositional changes in a material can be affected by elastic properties of the alloy. This is done by considering a Landau-Ginzburg theory of binary alloy with an elastic interaction and solving for the elastic interactions. I also describe how finite sized confined grains leads to supression of spinodal decompositon in an attempt to motivate how to think about polycrystallinity in binary alloys.

Phase transitions of binary alloys with elastic inhomogeneity.

In elastically inhomogeneous alloys, in which the shear modulus depends on the composition, coarsening in phase separation can be pinned even without quenched disorder. Here networks in the soft phase enclose the domains in the hard phase. Highly asymmetric strains in the two regions create large free energy barriers that prevent further coarsening. Thus a phase transition occurs between the on...

Computer simulation of spinodal decomposition in constrained films

The morphological evolution during spinodal decomposition of a binary alloy thin film elastically constrained by a substrate is studied. Elastic solutions, derived for elastically anisotropic thin films subject to the mixed stress-free and constraint boundary conditions, are employed in a three-dimensional phase-field model. The Cahn–Hilliard diffusion equation for a thin film boundary conditio...

Influence of mobile dislocations on phase separation in binary alloys

We introduce a continuum model to describe the phase separation of a binary alloy in the presence of mobile dislocations. The kinetics of the local composition and dislocation density are coupled through their elastic fields. We show both analytically and numerically that mobile dislocations modify the standard spinodal decomposition process, and lead to several regimes of growth. Depending on ...

Synthesis of Supported Pt Alloy three Dimensional Rhombus Shapes Nanoparticles for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

In this study PtFeCo ternary alloys nanoparticles of three dimentional (3D) rhombus shapes dispersed on graphene nanosheets (PtFeCo/Gr) were successfully prepared and studied as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in polymer-electrolyte fuel cells. A combination of analytical techniques including powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectra, inductively coupled plasma-...

Modeling of Phase Separation in Alloys with Coherent Elastic Misfit

Elastic interactions arising from a difference of lattice spacing between two coherent phases can have a strong influence on the phase separation (coarsening) behavior of alloys. If the elastic moduli are different in the two phases, the elastic interactions may accelerate, slow down or even stop the phase separation process. If the material is elastically anisotropic, the precipitates can be s...
